I was a games tester at EA and my colleagues and I were all treated as items slightly more expendable than the office equipment and there were no realistic paths upwards. I wouldn't say games testing is an awful job for the report writing though: it's an awful job in that you don't 'play' games: you try to break them as much as possible by doing repetitive and unenjoyable actions such as running a character into walls and pressing buttons whenever you're not supposed to or would want to.
